SOMERSET director of cricket Matt Maynard admitted his side were ‘totally outplayed’ by high-flying Yorkshire after being thrashed by an innings and 126 runs at Headingley last week.

Maynard said: “We were totally outplayed by clearly the best side in the competition.

“It was a good toss to win but then you have still got to execute your skills and the way that Yorkshire bowled on that first morning was terrific.

“In that first innings we were bowled out by a great bowling performance from Yorkshire.

“When they batted we battled hard, but when things are going well you get a little bit of luck and we beat the bat quite often but couldn’t just change the game after we were bowled out for just over 100 - after that it was always going to be a tough game for us.

“Listening to Jason Gillespie and Tim Bresnan after the game they said that they believed it was the best that they have bowled as a unit for a good number of years.

“That doesn’t give us any solace in the result because we were totally outplayed but is shows the standard.

“They are getting better and we need to get a lot better in the next three games.”

“I think we have got to take the positives out of the Worcestershire game and the way we played in the first innings.

“Had it not been for the rain I am sure we would have come away with 11 more points from that.

“However, that is history like the Yorkshire game and now we just have to really focus on our next fixture which we will be doing in practice on Monday and Tuesday - in fact a couple of the boys were in on Friday and have been in today.”
