SOMERSET have admitted they are unable to put an exact time frame on Jamie Overton’s calf injury, but hope to have the young speedster available for their County Championship trip to Surrey on April 24.

Overton, along with twin brother Craig – who is banned - will miss the season opener at Durham, which gets underway on Sunday (April 10), after sustaining a mild tear to his calf during the pre-season friendly against Gloucestershire.

Jamie Thorpe, the Somerset Physio said: “Jamie has got a mild tear to the calf muscle in his right leg, which he suffered at the start of the Gloucestershire match, since when we have been working with him to ideally for the match against Durham on April 10.

“However we now think that is a little bit too soon so we are reassessing to make sure that we get him right because there is a long season.

“Unfortunately for Jamie he wasn’t responding as quickly as we would have liked so now we have ruled the Durham match out.

“Potentially the next match on the radar for Jamie is the game against Surrey on April 24, and before that the coaches will want him to prove his fitness and the match with Cardiff gives us that opportunity on April 17.

“However at the end of the day it is about making sure that Jamie isn’t going to suffer any re-occurrence of the injury so we want to make sure that he is as fit and strong as he can be, and we can’t put an exact time frame on that.”
