SOMERSET seamer Jamie Overton admitted his side "aren't where they want to be" in the game after losing three early wickets in the evening session of the opening day against Yorkshire.

Overton took 3-30 from 15 overs and was the standout bowler as Yorkshire were bowled out for 202, but the hosts limped to 41-3 in response after Dean Elgar, Tom Abell and Marcus Trescothick all fell cheaply.

Speaking after the close of play, the 23-year-old said: "It was a frustrating way to finish, and it's not where we'd like to be.

"It just seems that a lot of the batsmen are out of form at the same time, but they are all trying their hardest and we have every confidence they can turn it round.

"Hopefully Hildy [James Hildreth] and Davo [Steve Davies] can kick on tomorrow and that can be the day everyone starts to cash in."

Overton has impressed with the ball in recent weeks and consistently looked a threat on what has become a challenging wicket for pace bowlers in Taunton.

He varied the length of his deliveries effectively on day one, as Peter Handscomb will testify - the Australian was peppered with accurate bouncers before being pinned lbw by a fuller delivery.

"It's been coming out nicely of late - I've been really trying to properly run as the pitch doesn't offer much, so I have been aiming to hit the pitch hard and cause problems," Overton said.

"Between us we just try and bowl as many dot balls as possible to build pressure, and it seems to be working well at the moment."

Yorkshire have a lead of 161 going into day two, but the Barnstaple-born bowler was optimistic about his side's chances.

"They are probably ahead on balance as things stand, but if we have a good partnership then everything changes - if we make it to 120-3 tomorrow then I would say we are in control," he said.

"I think 250-300 is a good score on this wicket, so that is what we will be aiming for."
