WELLINGTON men's league is hotting up and the new boys on the block, aptly named the Newbees, can celebrate their first win.

Derek Vile, Malcolm Warren, Stuart Troake and Nick Channon are walking tall after a strong 19 -9 victory over Vernon Adams' Wellington 2s.

Jez Harvey, Bill Brett, Mark Phillips and Bill Heard's Old Codgers proved too strong for Martin Speakman's Wiveliscombe team although the final result was close.

Codgers won 14-11, enough to move them up into top spot in the table.

Ray Smith's Hemyock were knocked off their perch by Ron Greenways Wellington 1 squad.

The result was a draw, but as Hemyock only got one point out of it they have now dropped into second place.

The Mixed Triples saw the wandering Nomads still in fine form. Betty Hill, Laurie Greaves and Gordon Wedlake had a close game against Chris Thorne's Pilgrims but their 18 -14 victory keeps Nomads in prime spot, two points clear of their nearest rivals.

Hemyock’s Flo and Gilbert Chown and skip Shirley Phillips' rocked Fivers with a comprehensive 29 -12 win while David Capell, Chris Capell and Matt Geraghty's Beavers took an even bigger victory over a dispirited Southsiders, 38-11.

In the Ladies Triples League Thelma Helps, Ann Gill and Diane Harrison's Ladybirds took on Betty Hill, Julia Stanton and Winn Courtney's Robins in a close battle.

Robins were winning until the last four ends when Ladybirds showed their fighting spirit and picked up two 4s in consecutive ends to overtake and claim their victory 17-13.

Janice Thorne, Joyce Jones, Gordon Wedlake and Mike Worden's YZED's showed why they are “played 6, won 6” by adding another win to their total against the poor old Badgers who seem to have dug themselves into a deep hole this week losing 23-1.

Meanwhile Wally Perry, Geoff Jenkins, T. Shere and Mary Jenkins' Gumboots were also in fine form, defeating the normally predatory Buzzards 19-5.
