FOOTBALL: Fine away win for Wellington
3:12pm Sunday 17th February 2013 in Sport
WELLINGTON climbed another place from the bottom of the Toolstation division one table courtesy of an excellent 2-0 victory at Calne Town yesterday.
It ended a run of three successive away defeats and was richly deserved after a superb all-round team display.
Neither side created a clearcut chance in the goalless first half on Calne's pudding of a pitch although Wellington demonstrated the neat passing game which has become a trademark of their football under manager Jamie Ward.
And the visitors got off to a flying start after the break by taking the lead as a flowing move ended with striker Corey Lewis firing in a shot which keeper Steve Allison could only parry on to the far post and into the net.
That goal sparked Calne into life and they almost equalised five minutes later when Jon Davolle lifted the ball over the bar from close range.
But it proved to be their only serious effort on goal with the Wellington back four of Tom Ellis, Tim Legg, Martin White and Jack Adams - with keeper Jake Viney behind them - fending off all advances.
Indeed Wellington increased their lead - and sealed victory - six minutes from time as a corner by substitute Joe Holmes was punched into his own net by luckless keeper Allison.
Wellington: Jake Viney, Tom Ellis, Martin White, Tim Legg, Jack Adams, Nicky Ford, Ollie Chamberlain, Andy Butler, Luke Redrup, Corey Lewis, Kyle Bassett. Substitutes: Scott Holland, Joe Holmes and Max Westlake (all used). Attendance: 52.
