RUGBY: Titans travel to Devon for latest friendly
10:40am Friday 16th August 2013 in Sport
TAUNTON Titans RFC travel to Devon for their second pre-season match this Saturday at 2.30pm as they lock horns with the All Whites of Newton Abbot.
It has been three seasons since the teams met in league competition but the stakes are high for prospective Titans players as they descend into dangerous Devon territory knowing a good performance is required if they are to win.
Physically, the Somerset men will need to up their game in the loose and setpiece if they are to gain the upper hand over a battle-hardened All Whites pack marshalled by former Taunton scrum half Matt Newman.
Speaking this week, head coach Tony Yapp said: “When we planned this game, we did so knowing the All Whites are a strong team at home and would present us with a very physical challenge, which we wanted. “They have a monster-size pack, which is something we need to learn to be able to deal with now before the national league season starts in September. “The squad has been cut down from the one that played against Hornets with the guys not involved playing at 1pm for the 2nd XV team, who also travel to Newton Abbot.
“For supporters travelling down there will be a few players in the Newton team they may recognise, including Matt Newman, Billy Massingham, and also Stephen Ward who is the backs coach there now.
“After last week we have identified a few areas to work on but also took a lot of positives from the game as well. “
