FOOTBALL: In-form Wellington are riding high
10:23pm Sunday 13th October 2013 in Sport
WELLINGTON moved up to second place in division one of the Toolstation Western league yesterday thanks to a 3-1 home win over Welton Rovers.
Wellington were kept at bay by Welton for a time in the game, but the home side were always the more likely to score and did so through the in-form Ollie Chamberlain who hit the back of the net on the half hour.
The second half started in spectacular style for Wellington when Alex Piper hit a thunderbolt of a shot from the right wing that nestled in the left hand corner of the Welton goal and left the home crowd in awe.
Luke Redrup smashed a shot back off the bar which resulted in a got a free kick. After the initial dead ball shot had been saved by the Welton keeper Redrup had just enough power to toe poke the ball over the line once it had broken free to leave the score 3-0.
A James Cooper penalty pulled one back for Welton late on, but they could not deny Wellington an eighth win of the season.
