Keyline Taunton Sunday League
Old Inn 2, Wellington Warriors 1
OLD Inn fought back from 1-0 down to beat Wellington Warriors at Galmington on Sunday morning.
Wellington took the lead in the first half with a goal from Dave Darch but Kieron Wyatt finished off a flowing move to level the scores and Matt Lukins popped up to score the winner midway through the second half.
On a wonderful morning for football, Wellington dominated the early exchanges with a crisp passing game.
They came close to opening the scoring on a number of occasions and eventually took a deserved lead midway through the first half, when Darch fired home from close range.
The second half was a different story with Old Inn gradually growing into the game.
They equalised on the hour when Wyatt found the back of the net with a well-placed shot following a neat team move.
This was only the beginning for Old Inn as they took control of the game with a long spell of possession and pressure.
They were rewarded with a second goal courtesy of Lukins’ fine finish – and eventually held out to take the win.
Old Inn manager Paul Gartland said his side took a while to get started but was pleased to take a vital three points.
He said: “As usual this season we appeared to start the game more than half asleep and Wellington Warriors took full advantage of this situation and bossed the majority of the first half.
“Slowly but surely we started to gain a measure of control and pass the ball around, rather than go route one.
“This shift in mentality did the trick and a great passage of movement resulted in Kieron Wyatt equalising.
“With the game now becoming stretched, a rare Matt Lukins goal proved to be the decider, although Wellington had a last minute disputed corner awarded, cleared to the sound of the final whistle.”
Wellington manager Paul Sellick was disappointed not to take more from the game.
He said: “We’ve been frustrated with the results recently, losing by the odd goal.
“Silly goals again conceded today but very proud of the lads in their first year in Division One and over the last seven seasons keeping them together.
“We had a makeshift side this week as so many players were out – but we have a great squad, with quality throughout – we just need to make that statement with the results.”
