WELLINGTON School pupil Jessica Gundry has become the national Under-18 epee champion for the second year running.

She competed in the British Youth Championships in Sheffield and beat hot competition to retain her title.

British Under-17 champion Jade Clarke came third in the Under-18s despite being the youngest in the age group.

Jade has just spent two weeks in Bulgaria at the world championships.

A third Wellington pupil, Olivia Savage, also performed well to come 16th out of 89 fencers in the Under-12 age group Unfortunately she was drawn against the No1 but she lost only by two points.

Coach George Felletar said: “Our fencers work so hard and are immensely dedicated and truly deserve these accolades.

“We are delighted that their commitment has paid off, especially against such tough opposition”.

Olivia and her sister Ninea were also in action last weekend at Millfield School in the Independent Association of Prep Schools’ fencing competition – a country-wide competition splilt into three age groups.

Olivia won the Under-14 foil after beating her older sister in the quarter finals.
