WEST Somerset Veterans were crowned Somerset FA Veterans League Cup winners thanks to a thrilling 3-1 victory over Wells City Veterans at Street FC.

This was the second year the team has entered the competition and are looking to repeat their success next year.

Player/manager Jason Hill said: “We had trouble getting a side together last year but this season things have gone really well.

“To be honest we really entered mainly for the enjoyment as there’s a great social side to it as well. Winning was just a bonus.”

The competition is open to players over 35 although each team is allowed two players over 30.

West Somerset’s oldest player was 55-year-old Tommy Todd who had the pleasure of playing alongside his son Lee (36).

With the match decided in the team’s favour in injury time, Tommy was given a chance to get on the scoresheet from the penalty spot – but fluffed his chance.

West Somerset had been quick to stamp their authority on the match and took the lead after 15 minutes through a fine finish from James Browning. They doubled their advantage shortly after when Hill beat the offside trap to score from close range.

West Somerset almost made it 3-0 but the crossbar came to City’s rescue, a let-off which seemed to shake Wells into action as Pete Vowles finished coolly from a corner to reduce the deficit to 2-1 right on half-time.

Yet West Somerset were quickest out of the blocks in the second half and they forged into a 3-1 lead through Lee Todd, before going on to create more superb opportunities to put paid to their opponents.

That sparked a late riposte from Wells and had it not been for two superb saves from goalkeeper Rob Lobb they might easily have found themselves back level.

Tommy Todd went on to strike his penalty the post but it was never going to dampen West Somerset’s spirits as seconds later the final whistle was blown and they were crowned champions.

The competition is in its fifth season and consists of ten teams, but new sides are always welcome to sign up.
