JUST four of Galmington’s Somerset League teams were in action on the opening Saturday of the new season with first division Claremont leading the way with an excellent if nail-biting win over Taunton’s Quantock at the Vale.

Claremont began strongly, taking an early lead, but an experienced Quantock team responded well and Claremont only held a slender three-goal lead after the first quarter.

Quantock continued to put Claremont under pressure in the second period and quickly drew level but Claremont dug deep and did well to hold Quantock as half-time arrived with the scores level.

The match then took another twist as Claremont took control in the third quarter, with shooters Gina Sayer and Caitlin Evans taking full advantage of their extra possession, and they pulled six goals ahead going into the last period.

As expected a strong Quantock side came back well but with debutant Jaz Wilson dominating the centre court Claremont held on for a fine victory by 44 goals to 22.

Quantock player of the match: Melissa Cleverly.

Other results: Division Two – Queensway 26, Monmouth 48 (Galmington Player of the Match Alice Alger-Green); Division Three – Newbarn 22, Blackdown 32 (Galmington POM Rachel Darby, Taunton POM Rhonda Robins); Comeytrowe 20, Jesters 42 (POM Lucy Hemmings).

Galmington and Trident begin their South-West regional league season this weekend. Trident visit Almondsbury in division two on Saturday while Galmington host Cornwall Saints at the Vale on Sunday in Division One. The match starts at 12.30 and all spectators are welcome.
