BOTH Galmington and Trident opened their regional league campaigns with impressive wins.

Galmington entertained Saints Cornwall in Division One at the Vale on Sunday and quickly built a 6-0 lead as the young Cornish side took a while to settle.

Galmington kept their fast-flowing netball going to keep Saints on the back foot and had extended their lead to 16-4 by the end of the first quarter.

Lauren-Jade Griffiths was in superb form at goal defence, taking numerous clean interceptions and combining brilliantly in defence with Helen Jones (GK) and Emma McCormack (WD) as Saints found it difficult to turn any possession into goals.

As a result Galmington held a commanding 34-10 half-time lead and little changed in the second half.

It would have been easy for Galmington to ease down but they maintained their high level of netball throughout to record a comprehensive victory by 68 goals to 26.

On Saturday Trident, who were promoted to Division Two last season, travelled to Almondsbury.

It was end-to-end netball in the first quarter but Trident just edged it 11-9.

However, Almondsbury responded well in the next period and half-time arrived with the score level at 21-21.

Trident regrouped, and with Jo James playing excellently at goal defence, they again went ahead but were still only 32-29 ahead going into the final quarter.

The home team pressed hard but Trident continued to play well as a team and they pulled away for a deserved win by 44 goals to 37.

It was a successful weekend for Galmington, with the only three of their Somerset league teams in action all winning.
