A SHOCK, a surprise and a few close calls were the highlights of the second round of the Gardner Cup.

The shock came at Cotford where the first division side played host to third division new boys Taunton North. Two Tom Wadham goals and one from Adrian Kerr proved more than enough for the visitors in a 3-1 win.

Wellington Warriors put up a great performance as they beat cup holders DB United.

Warriors led 1-0 at half time before doubling their advantage in the second half. DB hit back but Warriors extended their lead again.

DB kept themselves in the contest before a fourth Warriors goal finished the job for a 4-2 win.

Scorers for Warriors were Ashley Grist with two on his debut, Jack Bryant and Jack Kelly.

Princess Royal were subjected to a much tougher afternoon than they could ever anticipate. Opponents were third division White Hart Albion who led three times before succumbing to an amazing 8-6 defeat.

Royals scorers were Mark Kmita (2), Jake Quick (2) Geo Whiting (2), Ryan Holloway and Joe Palmer.

White Hart kept the result in doubt until the end with Sam Bates and Craig Allen scoring twice. Chris Mckee and debutant Danny Perks also found the net.

Another team who had to work for their win were AFC Grove who put paid to a stubborn Hamilton Reserves 5-3.

It all looked plain sailing for Grove as they opened up a 4-0 lead but Hamilton battled and kept Grove honest to the end.

Grove’s scorers were Nick Woon (2), Matt Pounde, Ali Pounde and Joe Jones.

Things proved a little easier for three other top division sides.

Ash Rangers put 12 past AEK Taunton with brothers Gary and Terry Mckiernan hitting three each. Other scores came via Ben Bartlett (2), Harvey Puddy, Scott Chidgey, Joe Wilkinson and an own goal.

AEK worked hard throughout and replied with three goals of their own.

Tone Youth saw off the challenge of White Eagles 4-1. Scott Graham, Adam Smith, Paul Stimpson and Matt Blee scored Tone’s goals while the reply came from Szymon Ulilzek.

Old Inn came from behind to beat Blue Park Rangers. Second division Rangers went ahead through Gareth Conway but by half time Old Inn were 2-1 up.

Robbie Stowell levelled for Blue Park before Old Inn went through the gears scoring four unanswered goals for a 6-2 win.

Mark Oram and Oliver Acheson scored the goals for Mariners as they beat North Curry 2-1 after extra time.

The quarter final draw sees AFC Grove play Mariners, Wellington Warriors face Taunton North, Ash Rangers take on Old Inn and Tone Youth host Princess Royal.

Only one Division One game took place and it produced a draw, Hamilton going ahead through James Osborne before Bathpool hit back to claim a point.

AFC Dunster beat Wellington Warriors 2-1 in Division Two’s lone fixture.

In Division Three, Wyvern go top with a good 4-1 win over Wanderers.

Shepherds Thursday were in good form, recording a 6-2 win over Williton with two goals apiece for Simon Clothier, Kye Haselwood and Paul Lawrence.

There was a rare victory for Watchet Blue Waves who beat Trinity Rangers 2-1.
