THERE were two huge Somerset cup semi-finals played on Sunday as two of the best sides in Taunton took on Bath’s finest.

AFC Grove travelled to last year’s runners up, GT Sports.

Grove struck first through Nick Woon and held the lead till half time.

GT levelled in the second half and Grove bemoaned their luck as they had two very good penalty shouts turned down.

The Taunton outfit then took the lead again early in the first period of extra time, Sam Towler firing home, and were only minutes away from a memorable victory when GT levelled again to take the game to penalties.

Grove missed their opening two spot kicks and watched in anguish as GT scored their first four to take the tie.

Bathpool also had to travel. They played Kingsmead, another top outfit who proved just too good for Bathpool, beating them 4-0.

Bathpool failed to make in-roads into the home defence while at the other end Kingsmead were clinical in taking their chances.

At least Grove have the consolation of still being involved in three domestic cup competitions.

Ash Rangers won the only first Division 1 game of the day when in difficult conditions they overcame DB United 4-2.

Ash took the lead early through Sam Wilkinson and then a 35 yard looping shot from Harvey Puddy put them two up.

DB hit back before half time only for Ash to put the game beyond doubt with two quick second half goals from Gary Mckiernan and Joe Greenwood.

The opening game of the Keyline Cup saw Princess Royal beat Cotford Saints 6-2 in a Group A game.

In Division 2 the promotion picture became murkier as the top two both lost.

North Curry went down at home to promotion rivals Mariners, Matt Millard, Jacob Smith and Ian Salter all scoring for Mariners in a 3-2 win.

Meanwhile Hamilton reserves turned the table upside down as they won 3-2 against Wellington Warriors.

Churchinford are just about out of the running after falling to a 2-1 defeat at White Eagles for whom Artur Jacaszek scored both.

Blue Park Rangers lost 5-2 at home to AFC Dunster. The game was locked at 2-2 at half time, but Dunster stepped up in the second to take the game with three unanswered goals.

Ash Cook and goalkeeper Andy Moore scored for Blue Park.

The game was abandoned after 75 minute due to pouring rain but the result stands.

Taunton North had a great day in Division 3.

They won 6-1 at Williton thanks to goals from Adam Thornton (3), George Scutt, Tom Wadham and Andy Kerr.

And their celebrations were multiplied as both their promotion rivals dropped points.

Leaders Castlemoat went down 5-4 at Wyvern and White Hart Albion were held to 1-1 a draw by lowly Trinity Rangers.

Its very much advantage Taunton North now who are yet to lose in any competition this season.

Carhampton hammered Wand-erers 7-1 and Watchet had a great away day at AEK Taunton, going home with a 5-0 win.
