ALL eight of Galmington’s senior teams were in action at the weekend in what proved to be a very exciting and successful series of matches.

Galmington were in Plymouth to play old Regional League Division One rivals, Pilgrims in a very tense and close encounter.

Galmington began well, scoring the first three goals but could but open up a significant lead as every time they went three goals ahead, Pilgrims came back.

Galmington led 12-11 after the first quarter and the next followed the same pattern, with Galmington going ahead only for Pilgrims to respond.

Goal shooter, Beth Blackwell was in excellent form, taking advantage of every opportunity, but Pilgrims scored the last three goals of the quarter to draw level at 23-23.

Pilgrims took the lead in third, to head into the final quarter 34-31 ahead – but five goals without reply thrust Galmington back into the lead.

The game’s topsy-turvy nature continued, with Pilgrims going 39-39 ahead in the closing stages, but two crucial interceptions by goalkeeper, Helen Jones saw Galmington sneak home by the closest of margins.

In Division two, Trident beat runaway league leaders, Hucclecote B by just four points.

Trident finished the first quarter 10-8 up, but a Hucclecote fight back saw them leading 18-16 at half-time.

The sides were evenly matched and the result was very much in the balance at the end of the third quarter, with Hucclecote one point ahead at 28-27.

But Trident were in determined mood and after the score had moved on to 35-34 in Hucclecote’s advantage, Trident scored five times without reply to win 40-36.

Hovelands and Claremont met each other in Somerset Premier Division, with Hovelands running out 47-40 winners.

After Hovelands had opened up a 10-5 lead in the first quarter, Claremont hit back to level the scores at 12-12.

At half-time, Hovelands led 25-20 and they increased their lead to eight goals in the third period, but excellent shooting from Caitlin Evans saw Claremont respond well – but they still trailed 36-31 at the end of the quarter.

Any thoughts they had of reducing the deficit disappeared, as Polly Ridgeway took numerous interceptions to ensure a victory for Hovelands.

In Division One, bottom-of-the-table Parkfield beat joint leaders Tone 40-25, with Kerry Quirk dominating centre court.

Queensway fought back from 16-8 down at half-time to beat Blackdown 32-26 in Division Three, with goalkeeper Carol Manning particularly impressive – while a young Newbarn team suffered a 44-19 defeat at undefeated leaders, Avalon. Hannah Lenthall battled hard for Newbarn, covering every inch of the court.

An even younger Comeytrowe team snatched a remarkable 24-21 victory over Tudor, with Anna Kennedy excellent in defence.
