TONY Yapp praised the 'character and commitment' of his players after Taunton Titans signed off their home season with a workmanlike victory over Worthing Raiders on Saturday.

Titans were reduced to 14-men early in the first half when Alex Chase was sent off, but the home side - buoyed by a man of the match display from Dan Frost and 20 points from Gary Kingdom - rallied to record a 30-12 win, much to the delight of their head coach.

Yapp said: "Saturday was a game that reminds us why we are all involved in sport; the character and commitment shown by the players and the noise generated by a large home crowd created a great atmosphere for our last game at Hyde Park before the season ends.

"Despite being the last game of the season it was also a game of firsts; we received our first red card of the season which created more pressure for the boys left on the field because for 72 minutes we had to play with 14 men.

"During that 72 minutes the players certainly showed what they were about, they really got stuck into a much bigger Worthing team and played with a real commitment and energy right the way through.

"Our attack was constantly causing problems for them and our defence was as good as it's been all season, which is crazy really when you think we had a player less on the field.

"What shows the size of the performance is we knew Worthing themselves were desperate for points to avoid the drop so there was no lack of effort on their behalf.

"Saturday was a great way to finish our last game at Hyde Park, but we are desperate to finish the season well, so with two games to go we will not be letting up in the next couple of weeks as we go in pursuit of two more wins."

Forwards coach, Chris Brown added: "Having a player sent off means reorganisation and thinking, but ultimately raised work rate from the group.

"The team put a real shift in which was the difference in the end.

"Our lineout functioned well on Saturday and our backs sped the game up with accuracy and finesse. I am delighted with the ability of the players to adapt and change their mindset."
