TAUNTON Titans get their National League Two South campaign up and running on Saturday with a trip to Redingensians Rams.

Last season the Titans won both fixtures between the two sides on their way to a fifth-placed finish, scoring 40 points in both games and only conceding 20 points in total over the games.

Over the two games there were eight different try scorers, with Sam Prior scoring two in the first game and Nick Mason getting a brace in the return fixture with Gary Kingdom contributing 31 points with the boot.

After a good pre-season the Titans go into the game looking forward to the fixture but as always there is always a tinge of apprehension with a little of the unknown and how other teams have recruited and developed over the off season.

With several new players in the Titans ranks and only a few knocks, the coaches will be selecting from a larger squad and hoping to start the season on a winning note.

The Titans’ first XV rounded off their pre-season campaign with a 33-31 win over Welsh Championship side Cardiff Met University at Hyde Park on Friday night.

It followed up a convincing 66-12 home victory over Ivybridge in their opening home friendly on August 13, before a spirited display in a 42-12 defeat to Welsh Premiership side Cardiff at the Arms Park.

Head coach Tony Yapp said: “We’ve have had a great pre-season with some tough games and the boys have worked hard throughout the training and have put in some great performances.

“We have been lucky and have only picked up a few injuries and have benefitted from the new players that have come into the club who have brought some new energy and competition for places.

“We are looking forward now to league rugby and testing ourselves against our peers.”

The club were also boosted during the close season with the news Yapp has committed himself to the club until at least 2019 after signing a new deal.
