TAUNTON Town’s frantic early season shows no signs of abating as they prepare to take on last season’s league champions Cinderford Town in the FA Cup first preliminary round on Saturday (3pm), writes Kerry Miller.

The Forest of Dean club won few friends during the spring when they attempted to reject promotion but were ordered to play in the Premier Division by the authorities and Leigh Robinson’s side will be out to prove a point and gain revenge for the defeat the Causeway which gave the home side the title.

Town showed plenty to enthuse about on Monday at Tiverton after Saturday’s less than impressive late show against Bridgwater, and Robinson will be eager to progress in the competition which has prize money of £3,000 for this round alone.

Following the Tivvy game Robinson commented: “We played well today and a draw was the very least we deserved I thought. On a seriously hot day for football our fitness stood up to the test which was pleasing as these Saturday-Monday games can be hard to handle physically.

“A tricky one to sum up as we may have accepted a point before the game but can’t help but be a bit frustrated that we didn’t win in the way the game went.

“We can put August to bed now though and say it’s been a success. There have been ups and downs admittedly but, with league points on the board plus FA Cup progress with such a new team and with numerous unavailabilities, we have to be pretty satisfied.”

Mercifully the cup means the following midweek has been left free for any replay at the Causeway on Tuesday.

On Saturday week Town have another home game when North Leigh visit the Viridor Stadium. That club are joint second with four wins from six games and will provide another strong test.
