TAUNTON Town secured their place in Monday’s FA Cup second qualifying round draw after seeing off Cinderford Town 2-0 in front of 242 at the Viridor Stadium this afternoon (Saturday).

Pierce Mitchell gave Taunton the lead 15 minutes in with a low angled drive across keeper Ben Fletcher.

The Peacocks were then given a let off shortly afterwards when Gethyn Hill smashed a penalty against the bar.

In what was a scrappy affair, Cinderford also wasted another glorious chance to level in the dying moments when Blaine Waugh went clean through but couldn’t convert.

Jordan Rogers then made sure from the spot in added time after Matt Wright had been bundled over in the box.

“The aim was to be in the hat for Monday and that’s exactly what we’ve done,” said Taunton boss Leigh Robinson.

“It probably wasn’t the best performance today, in what was a scrappy game with the conditions, but cup games are just about winning so we’re really pleased.

“They’ve missed two really good chances and these games are often decided on these moments.

“You’ve got to take your luck and we had a little bit of that today – but that’s cup football.”

On the prospect of who his side will pull out of the hat, Robinson said: “Anything winnable but obviously we’d like a prestigious tie that’ll attract a big crowd.

“For me personally, I’d love to go back to my home town and play Hitchin Town, because I’ve never done that before and purely for nostalgia reasons as I grew up there.”
