SOMERSET skipper Chris Rogers says spinner Jack Leach’s match-winning six-wicket haul against Warwickshire this morning has further pressed his claim for an England call-up.

Leach finished with figures of 6-42 as the visitors were bowled out for 152 on the third morning of a remarkable Specsavers County Championship Division One clash between the sides at Taunton – earning Somerset a 31-run victory.

It was a match that saw 21 wickets on day one, with Somerset all out for 95 on the first morning after choosing to bat, before recovering to record an astonishing victory.

“These are almost alien-like conditions and Jack can bowl so well in them which is good for him,” said Rogers on Leach, who finished with match figures of 8-90.

“And who knows what is just round the corner for him, because he has now put his hand up for England.”

Leach’s performance followed that of debutant spinner Dom Bess, who had put Somerset back in contention on day one with 6-28 which helped bowl Warwickshire out for 123.

Somerset then made 211 in their second innings, with Rogers hitting 58, before Leach inspired victory – and also bagged the wicket of last man Josh Poysden to finish off the visitors.

“A lot of credit has to go to Dom Bess for his performance as a debutant,” said Rogers.

"Not only for his six wickets but for the catch (Alex Mellor) he took to get the first wicket, which was an absolute screamer and gave us a little bit of momentum.

“He deserves a lot of credit and I am sure he is going to enjoy his debut.”

On the win, which keeps alive Somerset’s hopes of winning the Championship for the first time, Rogers said: “This is another one we have had to fight for because, after the first innings, to think we were in a bit of strife is a little bit of an understatement.

“However we were so good with the ball and batted better in our second innings and I think we were favourites in the last innings. I would have rather been us than them.

“Credit to Warwickshire; they fought back well and it almost looked like the momentum had shifted, but it’s a crazy game with a twist and, fortunately, it went our way.”

On their title hopes he added: “All of the games are interesting ones at the moment.

“We’ve done what we can do; we’ve have played well and won the game and we have got the points.

“We have got two more games to go so it’s a great position to be in and it would be great to help Tres (Marcus Trescothick) to win a title for the first time.

“For the boys to be a part of that would be pretty special.”
