A CLOSELY-fought match in the Wellington Bowls Club Mixed League decided who would be top dogs in the second week of the season.

Norman Shutler, Mike Worden, Martin Speakman and skip Chris Thorne’s Yzeds were level with Lew Stanton, Joan Greenway, Bob Walters and skip John Lister’s Buzzards with just the one end to play.

It was too close to call at 10 shots apiece but Yzeds rose to the occasion and picked up a 3 to pinch it 13-10 to take their place at the top of the table.

Joan Thomson, Alec Ede, Esther Twose and skip Nick Channon’s Demons pulled off a good win against Keith Horwood’s Falcons 15-7.

And a very closely-fought game between John Mullen’s Badgers and Barry Vile’s Blackbirds ended in a deserved 12- 12 draw.

Hemyock pulled off a comfortable win this week - and they go top of the Men’s League.

They played John Lister’s Old Codgers in a game which started well for the Codgers but a well played 5 in the seventh followed by a 3 in the next gave Hemyock a big lead which they kept to the end win- ning 18-9.

Vic Horne, Derek Vile, Mike Connor and skip Nick Channon’s Newbees were on top form when they came up against Terry Dickins’ Wellington 2.

Twos took the lead briefly in the sixth but Newbees powered past to take it 14-7.

Newbees are in second place, just one point behind table-topping Hemyock.

Bert Gamlin, Martin Saunders, Kevin Gamlin and skip Barry Vile were 6-1 down after seven against Dennis Courtney’s Hasbeens but they pulled up their collective socks to catch up and then cheekily pinch it on the line 10-9.

In the Triples League Skylarks took a well deserved win against Nomads last week but ran into trouble this time around against Janice Thorne, Roland Bath and skip Chris Thorne’s Pilgrims who bowled really well from the start to win comfortbly 30-7.

Young superstar Leah Waygood, Yvonne Abbott and skip Nick Channon’s Woodpeckers pulled out all the stops against John Lister’s Beavers powering on to 28-9 shot victory against Beavers.

Norman Shutler, John Mullen and skip Ian Thomson’s Southsiders showed how the game should be played against an unfortunate Pilgrims team who did all they could but went down 24-4.

At this early stage in the season, the top four Triples League teams are level on points.

Pilgrims, Skylarks, Southsiders and Woodpeckers have two each.
