ONCE again Taunton Town gave it their all, but this time it wasn't quite enough, as Barrow AFC snatched victory in their FA Cup first round replay.

The game saw Taunton match their higher-ranked opponents almost all the way, but they were left cursing a late goal for their exit.

Ed Palmer raised hopes of an upset as he thumped in a free-kick to equalise with 15 minutes remaining, but his side were caught cold as Ryan Yates' strike two minutes after proved the winner.

The first half was an edgy affair, as Barrow - three divisions above Taunton in the league pyramid - dominated but failed to create goalscoring opportunities.

Two did come along at once, with Nick Anderton and Richie Bennett seeing efforts cleared off the line following a corner, but other than that Taunton keeper Lloyd Irish was underemployed.

Taunton had little more luck at the other end, Ed Palmer's free-kick deflected narrowly over the bar their sole chance of note.

The start of the second half saw the game burst into life. Jordan Williams, who had been Barrow's main threat before the interval, created an opening for himself and cracked a shot into the top corner on 48 minutes.

And it looked more likely that they would extend their lead than Taunton equalise. Williams broke free again, only for Irish to somehow get in the way to see the ball spoon over the bar.

Taunton brought on Craig Veal and Adam Kelly as they chased the game, but it was a defender who drew them level on 73 minutes.

Palmer was again on free-kick duties after a clumsy foul by Barrow's Alex Ray Harvey, and this time he hit it perfectly past wall and goalkeeper, right into the top corner.

Fifteen minutes to go, 1-1... could Taunton snatch victory?

Those hopes were snuffed out almost as soon as they appeared, as it took just two minutes for Barrow to go back in front. Yates crossed into the box and it looped past everyone and into the net.

A sickener for Taunton, who tried to grab another equaliser but were frustrated as the hosts saw the game out.

Ross Hannah and Bennett missed chances to wrap it up for Barrow, but ultimately they mattered not, the win secured 2-1.

The Peacocks have certainly done the county town proud with this cup run, however, making history by playing in the club's first ever FA Cup first round replay - and being edged out by one goal over 180 minutes against a team three leagues higher.
