FORMER Hamilton Green ABC boxer Pawel Augustynik became Taunton's only active professional boxer last Friday night, making his debut on Weston-Super-Mare Pier.

Boxing under the management of Bristol-based Chris and Jamie Sanigar, who have current world champions on their books, a lot is expected of Pawel.

And taking such a big support the pressure was on.

Augustynik didn't disappoint, putting on a fine display of skill, speed and fitness to outclass his opponent every round to take the win 40-36.

Augustynik is taking a break before the new year, when he is scheduled to be boxing professionally in February and potentially March.

PRIORSWOOD Amateur Boxing Club produced their first national champion last weekend when they took Taunton featherweight Brian Musarurwa to Chingford for the finals of the ABA novice championships.

Musarurwa was matched in the final against AJ Boyce from Earlsfields ABC, London, a club which produced Olympic heavyweight silver medallist Joe Joyce.

Musarurwa soon got his jab working against the more muscular Boyce, and caught him with sharp punches, while the southpaw struggled to catch the elusive Taunton boxer.

In round two, Brian took to the front foot, pushing his opponent back on to the ropes with his powerful punches and using his body shots.

Musarurwa didn’t give him a second's rest, which was having an effect on the London boxer who then seemed to be losing desire.

After a barrage of body shots at the end of round two, Boyce looked a beaten man.

It was no surprise when he didn’t come out for the final round, leaving Musarurwa to claim the title of National Featherweight Champion.

This was Brian’s fifth consecutive stoppage, which impressed the country’s top trainers.

Priorswood ABC train on Mondays and Wednesdays, 7-9pm, at Taunton North Youth Club – opposite Selworthy School.
