BISHOPS Lydeard were without a fixture on Saturday after falling to a defeat last Wednesday at the hands of Roman Glass St George.

A brace from James Quick and one from Zac Ryder ensured Lydeard more than played their part in a seven-goal thriller on the unfamiliar 3G surface, but the defeat ensured they could not close the gap between themselves and the top four in the Toolstation Western League.

This coming Saturday, Lydeard host Bishop Sutton.

WELLINGTON also had a blank weekend and saw their scheduled fixture at Warminster last Wednesday washed out, meaning they will have had a fortnight off by the time they kick off against Hengrove Athletic in the second round of the Les Phillips Cup on Saturday.

Welly will have some idea of what to expect from their opponents having played them twice already this season, picking up one win and a draw in the process.

The two teams had been due to play last weekend but Hengrove’s second string had a cup match of their own that took precedence.

Both sides are flying high in the league, with Hengrove fourth and Wellington second, so both will have their eye on a cup run to go alongside their impressive league form.

STAPLEGROVE were another side left kicking their heels on Saturday, but the team are set to return to action this weekend as they travel to Shepton Mallet Reserves in the Somerset County League Premier and First Division Cup.

Staplegrove have completed the league double over this weekend’s opponents, most recently winning 3-2 at the end of January, so will be confident of progressing.
