TAUNTON Titans full-back Gary Kingdom has admitted his disappointment with the overall performance of his side despite the victory against Barnstaple.

The experienced kicker's penalty in the last phase of the match ensured the Titans avoided a third consecutive defeat, but he insisted that the side can play much better than they did at Hyde Park on Saturday.

"It’s important to have got the win but we’re not really hung up on victories, we’re more focused on the performance," he said.

"So although we’ve got the win and we’re pleased with that, we have got to go away and look at ourselves because we still haven’t performed well so we’ve got to see how we can improve that."

The match was interrupted by a stoppage of over an hour after Barnstaple's Ben Hilton required the attention of four paramedics due to a serious back injury.

It was a delay that almost cost the hosts the game, as they let a 19-7 advantage slip before Kingdom's last-gasp penalty saved the day.

"It is hard to get going again, especially at my age, and I think we went to sleep after the stoppage," Kingdom said.

"That last little passage of three or four minutes at the end where we earned the penalty showed what we are capable of when we apply ourselves.

"We just need to go away now, look at it and see how we can make that application more regular."

Despite his many years in the game, Kingdom admitted that even he was in unfamiliar territory in seeing a game held up for so long.

"It’s an experience that I don’t think I’ve ever had and it’s one that probably only comes around once in a career so there’s no point dwelling on it, you’ve just got to react and get on with it," he said.

The kick that won the game was not easy by any stretch of the imagination, but Kingdom explained that, in some ways, that made his task simpler.

"To be honest, those sort of high pressure ones focus your mind and it’s just about getting through that process," he said.

"If it was bang in front 10 metres out I probably would have been more nervous, but it’s one of those shots for nothing so you’ve just got to back yourself and do it."
