SOMERSET bowler Craig Overton could be set to make his senior England debut in Taunton after captain Eoin Morgan confirmed each of the uncapped players in the T20 squad would feature in the three-match series against South Africa.

The 23-year-old joined up with the squad after the first match of the series, which England won comfortably by nine wickets in a match that saw Mason Crane handed his international bow on his home ground.

The same logic would see Overton take his place in the England side to play in the fixture at the County Ground, which will be filled with 12,500 spectators as the national side visit for the first time in 34 years.

Prior to the series, Morgan told the ECB website: “It’s an exciting time – we have rested players and a lot of new guys have come in.

“You’ll see everybody play at least one game – this is an opportunity to give people a chance and see what they can do on the international stage.

“The players that have come in are a bit younger than we have had in previous years but, looking ahead to the 2020 T20 World Cup, it’s good to blood these guys now as hopefully these will be the players representing us then.”

Speaking to the ECB reporters network, Overton added: “Making my England debut at the County Ground would be unbelievable and something I never thought could happen.

“I would love to play because it would give something back to my family and friends, along with all the Somerset members, who have supported me and the team so brilliantly.”

If selected, Overton – whose twin brother Jamie is representing the England Lions alongside Jack Leach against South Africa A this week – will be bowling on a pitch similar to that used in the record-breaking One-Day Cup quarter-final against Nottinghamshire, which saw more than 800 runs scored last Tuesday.

Elsewhere in the England side, former Somerset star Jos Buttler will keep wicket as he returns to play at the County Ground for only the second time since leaving for Lancashire in 2013.

Despite the fact the hosts have picked an experimental squad, regulars including Morgan, Alex Hales, Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow and Liam Plunkett are likely to feature as well as Sam Billings, who Somerset supporters may recall scored 135 from just 58 balls in Taunton three years ago.

South Africa, who were dumped out of the recent Champions Trophy in the group stages, have also rested some big guns but are led by one of the most destructive limited overs players in the world in AB de Villiers, who scored an unbeaten half-century in Southampton on Wednesday.
