County Championship - day two (close)

Hampshire 211-9d v Somerset 43-1

SOMERSET'S attempt to build a first innings lead was hampered by the weather on day two of their County Championship match against Hampshire, with only 13 overs possible before the rain intervened.

Resuming on 18 without loss, the visitors lost Marcus Trescothick for 13 when the former England opener played on to his stumps off the bowling of Gareth Berg.

Adam Hose was the surprising new man at three, with captain Tom Abell dropping himself down the order in a bid to find form, and the Isle of Wight-born batsman struck two crisp boundaries as he joined 20-year-old debutant Eddie Byrom at the crease.

However, the rain intervened just 54 minutes into the opening session and the two sides were left frustrated for the remainder of the day's play, which was abandoned shortly after 6.30pm.

Day three begins at 2pm tomorrow, with Byrom unbeaten on 13 from 50 balls and Hose resuming on 9.
