DAY six brought a first medal for the Somerset contingent we're tracking at Gold Coast 2018, and we have our fingers crossed that it's the first of many.

Here's a look back at today's Commonwealth Games action, and a preview of the day seven events that get underway tonight.

Hockey

A quiet day on the hockey front, with both Maddie Hinch and James Carson having completed their group stage involvement with England women and Wales men, respectively.

The final match for Carson and Wales was against England today, and a hat-trick from Sam Ward saw England edge the home nations clash 3-2.

That means Wales finish bottom of Pool B, with one draw and three losses from their four matches, but they've certainly held their own against hockey powerhouses England and India.

As for England women, they were assured of a place in the last four thanks to Monday's win over Malaysia, with the semi-finals to take place on Thursday.

Hinch and co will play New Zealand for a place in the final, although it is yet to be confirmed whether that game will be on at 10am or 12.15pm.

Lawn bowls

In the men's singles, Rob Paxton had one win and one loss on day six.

He started the day with defeat to Jamaica's Andrew Newell, falling 7-0 and 18-5 behind.

He fought back superbly, to 19-16, but Newell claimed victory 21-16.

Paxton bounced back in the best way, by beating Shannon McIlroy of New Zealand, the favourite for the competition.

McIlroy took an early 5-1 lead and then a 14-9 advantage, only for the England man to turn it round in the 14th and 15th ends, to lead 16-14.

From there he retained control, eventually triumphing 21-18.

Paxton said afterwards: “I didn’t play well this morning, but I had to win that [against McIlroy].

“I got into the game and found some good ones at the right time.

“You’ve got to look at his record and he’s been there seen it done it.

“Qualifying is back in my hands, and I’ll come back tomorrow and try and get that win I need.”

It leaves Paxton joint top of Section A with McIlroy, ahead of tomorrow's final group match against Cephas Kimwaki Kimani of Kenya (from midnight, UK time).

Victory for Paxton will see him into Thursday's quarter-finals.

The men's fours brought another victory for England (Sam Tolchard, Jamie Chestney, David Bolt and Louis Ridout) in Section D.

They never looked in danger against Brunei Darussalam, easing into an 11-1 lead after eight ends, and they wrapped it up 18-4.

Tomorrow brings a table-top clash between England and Scotland, who have also won both of their matches in the group, from 7am.

The men's fours quarter-finals also take place on Thursday.

Shooting

The headlines news from day six was David Luckman's gold medal in the Queen's Prize Pairs alongside Parag Patel.

They ended the first day of the competition at the top of the standings, and finished strongly to retain their title from Glasgow 2014.

Luckman also won gold in the Queen's Prize Individual event four years ago, and tomorrow sees him start that title defence.

The event starts from 1am, and again it is spread over two days.

More highlights

From midnight, England and New Zealand clash in Pool B of the netball competition, with the winner likely to avoid gold medal favourites Australia in the semi-finals.

James Heatly (Scotland) and Jack Laugher (England) lead the British challenge in diving's men's 1m springboard (10.05am).

There's plenty of athletics, too, from 10.15am, including the women's 400m final (12.45pm).
