WELL, they’ve finally done it: Taunton Town are champions.

Ironically, given they’ve had 16 seasons in Southern League West and several near misses in the playoffs up to this point, it’s all happened rather quickly.

It feels like they’ve been on course for the title for most of the season, but to clinch it with five games to spare required a very particular set of results.

And they’ve got them: while the Peacocks have extended their unbeaten run to 29 games, Salisbury, Wimborne Town and Bideford have shown impeccable timing with their defeats over the last couple of weeks.

Steve Claridge’s Salisbury look like they might even miss out on automatic promotion, with two defeats followed by a 2-2 draw on Tuesday, having been 2-0 up.

Wimborne and Bristol Manor Farm are just four points off the Whites now, meaning both have extra motivation to win their games with Taunton this month.

Not that the Peacocks are going to be resting up.

The pressure may be off the team (promotion and the title both ticked off), but there are several players aiming to show that they’re good enough to play for the club in the league above next season.

Excellent as Matt Wright and Dan Sullivan have been, I’m hoping to see Alpha Sow and Les Afful emulate Crouch and Defoe up top.
