Minehead youngsters secure cup triumph

MINEHEAD are celebrating after defeating Middlezoy to win the Taunton and District Youth League U-17s KO Cup.

The Seasiders won by 106 runs in the 35-over contest in front of a big crowd at their own Bircham Road ground.

The hosts batted first and scored 205-2 from their 35 overs, with opener Leigh Graddon making an unbeaten 82, Matt Drakely 41 and Dan Bowditch 34 not out.

In reply Middlezoy were bowled out for 99 in the 25th over, with Darren Sherrin, Gary Archer, Peter Deary and Hannah Sparks, fresh from her cup winning success for Somerset U-17 Girls bagging two wickets each.

This is the second success for Minehead in the Taunton and District Youth League.

Just a few weeks ago the U-15s won the West Division of their age group.

Youth manager Stuart Tudball said: “A lot of the success that we are now enjoying can be attributed to the fact that we set up the Minehead and West Somerset Cricket Academy, which is sponsored by Beaver Ford, five years ago. Since then a large number of young cricketers from across the area have had the chance spend time throughout the year improving their game.”
