A DAZZLING performance of shooting by player of the match GS Helen Lucas helped Taunton Vivary to a brilliant win away to Knights of Glastonbury.
The victory fired the team to the top of the Somerset League Premier Division.
Vivary took the slender lead 15-14 the first period and opened up the lead to 35-26 at half time.
WA Claire Corns supported her shooters well and GK Heather Burston defended well throughout the game. Vivary kept the pressure on to win 67-48.
Team: Heather Burston, Kim Tong, Susie Marsh (capt), Faye Marsh, Claire Corns, Emily Tong, Helen Lucas.
Also in the Premier, Tone trailed 12-11 after the first quarter against Sharks of Yeovil who extended the lead to 22-18 at half-time.
Tone played well to pull back the deficit in the third but eventually went down 32-29. GD Ali White made many interceptions and was named player of the match.
In Division One, Quantock had a tough game against Paulton, who led 26-20 at half-time despite good work by Quantock’s shooters Jo Haskey and Lisa Grabham.
A disappointing third quarter let Paulton pull further ahead and they went on to win 49-36.
WA Carol Marsh was player of the match.
Outclassed Monmouth lost convincingly 59-17 to an experienced Dukes of Glastonbury side. GD Michelle Sloman worked tirelessly and player of the match Dawn Bissell was energetic in the centre court.
GALMINGTON faced a tough trip to Swindon to play in-form Lawn in Regional League Division One on Sunday and their task was made even more difficult as delays en-route meant they were unable to warm up fully.
Lawn took immediate advantage to build a 13-6 first quarter lead which gave them the momentum to stretch their advantage to 24-13 at half-time.
Galmington came more into the match in the next quarter with Kirsty Gaines, who had switched from goal defence to goalkeeper, particularly strong in defence.
However, having made inroads into the deficit, they were unable to maintain the pressure and Lawn moved further ahead by 36 goals to 22 and then pulled away for a comfortable victory by 50 goals to 27.
In Regional League Division Two Trident’s inconsistent season continued as they slipped to a disappointing defeat to lowly Bournemouth at Taunton Vale.
Trident trailed in the early stages but appeared to have taken control towards the end of the first quarter when they led 10-9.
Unfortunately it was Bournemouth who dominated the second quarter to establish a large 25-16 lead at the halfway stage.
Trident, for whom both Natalia Malessa (WA) and Emma McCormack (WD) were excellent, came back well in the third quarter to reduce the arrears to just four goals going into the final period but, despite all their pressure in the last quarter, they were unable to turn the match around and were beaten 45-40.
In the Premier Division of the Somerset League Claremont continued their recent good form with the narrowest of wins over Jupiter in Bridgwater. They made an excellent start with Christina Williams particularly impressive at goal defence to lead 11-6 after the first quarter and maintained their lead until half-time when they were 21-16 ahead.
Jupiter gradually began to close the gap in the next period and Claremont found themselves under pressure going into the final quarter with only a 30-29 advantage. With Lucy Parsons staying focussed and shooting well Claremont opened up a four-goal lead only for Jupiter to respond well and again close to within one goal. However, Claremont resisted intense pressure and held on to record a superb win by 40 goals to 39.
In the same division Parkfield produced probably their best performance of the season at Gems of Bridgwater. They began slowly and were soon 10-5 behind but came back well to trail 12-10 at the first break.
With Lisa Manley outstanding at goal attack they took a two-goal lead in the second quarter before Gems pegged them back for a half-time score of 20-20.
It was Gems who then took control at the start of the next period to hold a 36-29 lead and Parkfield, despite the excellence of Imogen Hobday at goal defence, were unable to pull back in the last quarter and went down to a 44 goals to 36 defeat.
