GOLF: Penny pinches Captain's Bowl at Taunton Vale
FRANK Penny was the winner in the top division of Saturday's First Captain's Bowl Competition at Taunton Vale Golf Club with a round of 68, followed closely by Steve D'Costa who edged into second spot ahead of Neil Whisler on countback after both returned with 70.
Chris Welsher was the clear winner in Division Two with 69, five ahead of Steve Cridge with 74, while Mark Rollinson was third with 75.
Richard Austin with 66 topped the third flight, but the net two places had to be separated by countback after which it was Steve Shirley who was second and Mike Saffin third after both recorded a round of 70. In Sunday's Past Captain's Trophy it was Darren Cross with 69 who triumphed in Division One.
But two players tied on 70 meaning that countback had to be used following which Chris Sammons was second and Paul White was third.
Division Two was headed by Dan Green with 65, Andrew Black was second with 69 after countback put him in front of third placed Chris Sealey who ended with the same score. The previous weekend's Captain's Day mixed team competition was won by Maggie Palmer, Jo Wyatt, Peter Moore and Chris Sammons who scored 110.
They were two ahead of second placed Jeanne Leader, James Keitch, Richard New and Mark Bushen.
Second place with 100 was claimed by Jackie Woodman, Keith Bigwood, Chris West and Paul Hewton, while the third team home comprised of Betty Norman, Nigel Baker, Roger Howard and Ray Dawe with 99.
