Wellington look for first win of the season
1:00pm Friday 31st August 2012 in Sport Latest
WELLINGTON are hoping to gain their first win of the season tomorrow (Saturday) in Division One of the Toolstation Western League.
They travel to face mid-table Cheddar in a 3pm kick-off.
Wellington moved off the foot of the table on Tuesday night without kicking a ball in anger.
Shrewton United’s 6-1 defeat at Chard Town saw them drop below Wellington to bottom spot on goal difference.
But it does little to ease the woe at Wellington where their disappointing start to the season continued last Saturday with a 4-1 defeat in Wiltshire.
The first half was goalless but it was Westbury who broke the deadlock four minutes after the restart when Nathan Hallett headed home a cross by Wayne Wheeler. A few minutes later it was 2-0 as Wheeler beat keeper Mike Neish with a fine shot from 20 yards.
Wellington pulled a goal back on the hour, skipper Leon Taswell taking advantage of some slow defending to net his second goal in successive games.
But Hallett rounded off a slick move by thrashing his second goal and Westbury's third into the roof of the net and captain Paul Beavers completed the scoring late on.
There was better news for Wellington Reserves as they started their Devon and Exeter League season with a 3-1 win at Tipton St John with goals from Nathan Thomas (two) and Oliver Nott.
Wellington are back in Toolstation League action on Saturday when they travel to face Cheddar, while the Reserves are away at Dundry Athletic in the First Round of the Somerset County Senior Cup.
