CRICKET: Busy end of season for Blagdon Hill
IN spite of losing half of their games to the weather the action came thick and fast in the final weeks for the cricketers on Blagdon Hill before the sun set on another season with their traditional match against the Presidents XI.
In a tense tussle against their old foes The Wombats at Knapp, the Blaggies hit 200-4 thanks to the in-form Simon Trump who made an impressive unbeaten 86 well supported by Andy Free who scored 56.
Wombats in reply were all out for 219, with the evergreen Martin Tuffill claiming 3-37.
It was honours even in the two games that Blagdon Hill played against new opponents Wiveliscombe.
In the first match in West Somerset the hosts hit 190-6, which proved to be too many for the Blaggies who could only reach 130-9.
However in their return game shortly afterwards on the Hill the visitors were bowled out for 135, which Blagdon reached for the loss of eight wickets in another close finish.
In another new fixture, against Hampshire Education Veterans, the hosts posted 202 thanks to an outstanding performance from young Theo Wright, who made an unbeaten 64, and Simon Trump's 57.In reply Hampshire were bowled out for 127.
In the finale to the season between the Presidents XI and the Captains XI in a 30 over encounter, the former batted first and made 158, which featured 66 from Russ Jennings and an unbeaten 30 by Simon Trump while Mike Lown claimed 2-16.
The Captains XI finished well short despite 36 from Tim Jones and 33 by Clive Barton. For the President's team Luke Bottomly took 3-9 and Russ Jennings 3-7.
The highlight of the season for Blagdon Hill was their successful three match tour to Croatia, which featured a hat-trick for Harry Trump.
The club’s annual dinner will be held on Saturday, October 20 at the club headquarters, The Lamb and Flag in Blagdon Hill, when the annual awards for batting bowling fielding and clubman of the year will be presented.
