Somerset Premier Cup second round

Taunton Town 0, Weston-super-Mare 3

Somerset Premier Cup holders Taunton Town's inexperienced side were comfortably beaten by National League South outfit Weston-super-Mare at the Viridor Stadium on Tuesday evening.

In a re-run of last year's final, just three first team regulars - including Chris McGrath, who lined up alongside son Callum - were present in the Peacocks XI.

The hosts were competitive in the first half, however, restricting their more experienced opponents to few chances in a scrappy opening 45 minutes.

Weston's class told after the break as the visitors scored three times in the space of seven minutes, with half-time subsitute Jason Pope influential down the right flank.

The opener came on 55 minutes as Pope's cross was deflected into his own net by Kyle Winter, and the lead was doubled shortly afterwards in direct fashion as a long ball was flicked on to Irnti Rapai, who slotted past Lloyd Irish.

Jarrad Welch sealed the outcome with a third for the away side just after the hour, taking down another Pope cross and finding the bottom corner with a minimum of fuss.

Taunton continued to battle, with Matt Trump seeing an effort disallowed for offside, but they never truly threatened their higher division opponents on a night that proved a good test for the young side, many of whom are part of the club's link-up with Bridgwater & Taunton College.

Next up for the Peacocks is the visit of Concord Rangers in the FA Trophy on Saturday.

Taunton Town: Lloyd Irish, Callum McGrath, Ben Palmer, Paul Grant, Tom Stone, Kyle Winter, Matt Trump, Chris McGrath (Brett Trowbridge), Shaun Anthony, Rhys Ford (Ollie Chamberlain), Kyle Lazowski (Rob Dray).
