TAUNTON Town boss Leigh Robinson is hoping his side can spring another cup surprise when they host National League South outfit Bognor Regis Town in the FA Trophy first round on Saturday.

The Peacocks now hold a 13-point advantage at the top of the league table after successive wins over Salisbury and Cinderford Town, and Robinson admitted further cup progress is seen as a bonus rather than a necessity.

“This is the sort of game we have enjoyed - we’ve beaten four National League South sides in the past year,” he said.

“Clearly, we are still underdogs, but we can go out there with no pressure and enjoy it.

“We’ve done what we needed to do in the cups this year in terms of prize money [Saturday’s winner will claim £6,000], so I’m seeing it as a nice game to have rather than a particularly important one.”

Changes could be made to the starting XI, with Robinson regretting not shuffling his pack for Tuesday night’s laboured victory over Cinderford.

Reflecting on the result, he said: “We played our get out of jail free card.

“We didn’t play with the same energy as we did on Saturday [against Salisbury], but I take my share of the blame for that as I should have made more changes.

“It’s always hard to change a winning team, but I didn’t realise how much Saturday had taken out of us.

“We got the job done, however, and it was a reminder that we always have to respect the opposition and can’t take anything for granted.”

Lloyd Irish was named man of the match and signed a contract with the club this week, and Robinson said of his goalkeeper: “He has had a few quiet games of late as we’ve defended well, but we know he can always be relied on and he showed why on Tuesday.”
