WITH promotion to the Southern League Premier Division secured last Saturday, Taunton Town's thoughts now turn to the title.

With Taunton winning at Bideford and Salisbury losing to Wimborne on Tuesday, the Peacocks now need just five more points from their six remaining games to be crowned champions.

Reflecting on the Bideford victory, manager Leigh Robinson said: “It was a really good performance, and I was pleased with our defending.

“It was good to get back to a resolute away performance after conceding a few at home recently, and get the clean sheet.

“I wasn’t sure what headspace we’d be in on Monday; it would have been easy to think Saturday had been our moment, but we weren’t lax at all.

“We’re still desperate to win the title, and it’s testament to the fitness of the players.”

Robinson’s clearly happy to have no more ifs and buts and the title in their own hands: regardless of what Salisbury do, two home victories this week will secure Taunton the title.

They could even clinch it tomorrow, if they win and Salisbury fail to beat Cinderford Town at home.

Taunton also have the small matter of extending their unbeaten league run, which is now up to 28 games.

Tomorrow (ko 3pm) they host playoff-chasing Evesham United, and then on Tuesday (ko 7.45pm) struggling Slimbridge visit Wordsworth Drive.

Taunton welcome back Veal after the striker missed the Bideford game, but Matt Buse is still a doubt with a knee injury.

Robinson added: “Saturday will be a tough game, as Evesham are a very streaky team.

“When they get on a winning run [they’ve won their last two], they’re difficult to stop, with plenty of physicality and experience in their team.

“But we have a massive carrot dangling in front of us.

“And Slimbridge, there’s no pressure on them coming into the game, which can help them.

“We’ve had good crowds in our last three home games; hopefully with an upturn in the weather we can break the 600 barrier, and the people of Taunton can see the club do something it’s never done before.”

WELLINGTON AFC, weather permitting, visit Chipping Sodbury Town tomorrow (ko 3pm), with their hosts currently one place and two points ahead of them in the Toolstation Western League Premier Division (Wellington are 14th).

Manager Clive Jones said: “We’ve not won an away game on a Saturday all season.

“We beat Chipping Sodbury at home, but they’re two even sides and we have got to play to our potential.”

In the First Division, ninth-placed Bishops Lydeard face three games in the next 10 days, starting away to Oldland Abbotonians, who are 13th in the standings, tomorrow (ko 3pm).

On Monday (April 9, ko 7.45pm), they host Welton Rovers – who are sixth – and the following Saturday (April 14, ko 3pm), it’s another home match, against 18th-placed Corsham Town.

Manager Brett Andrews said: “We’re looking to go out with the intention of winning every game, and our performances have certainly picked up over the last few weeks.

“We can still improve on our goalscoring, in order to pick up more points.”
