Mr Yeovil Town signs on for another season

YEOVIL Town captain Terry Skiverton finally signed a new one-year contract this afternoon to ensure that he remains at Huish Park for at least another season.

Skiverton, who was brought to the club by former head coach Colin Lippiatt from Welling United in the summer of 1999, has during that time become Yeovil's most successful captain of all-time having led the Glovers to FA Trophy, Nationwide Conference and Coca-Cola League Two glory.

He has so far made 353 first-team appearances and scored 41 goals for the club, but both those tallies would be more had he not been hindered by niggling injuries in the last couple of seasons.

But, all being well, Skiverton should break into Yeovil's all-time top ten of appearance-makersa remarkable feat in modern times when players seemingly move from club to club every few years.

He is currently 12th in the list - nine games behind goalkeeper Dave Jones who made 362 appearances for the club between 1957-67. To force his way into the top ten list he will have to make 27 appearances in the 2008-09 campaign to surpass the 379 matches played by keeper Tony Clarke between 1967-77.

Centre-half Skiverton, who will be celebrating his tenth year at Huish Park in the new campaign, will find himself among some of Yeovil's most well-known and admired players of yesteryear.

One thing which is pretty certain, however, is that he will not go all the way to number one in the appearance chart. That honour is currently held by Len Harris who played a staggering 691 matches between 1958-72 - a record that is unlikely ever to be broken.

All-time top ten appearance-makers is as follows: 1 Len Harris, 1958-72, 691; 2 Alan Herrity, 1962-73, 523; 3 Ken Thompson, 1967-77, 517; 4 John Clancy, 1969-77, 483; 5 Dave Taylor, 1960-69, 436; 6 Terry Cotton, 1971-77 and 1978-80, 415; 7 Bill Albury, 1960-67, 392; 8 Paul Smith, 1967-75, 385; 9 Stuart Housley, 1969-76 and 1979-80, 383; 10 Tony Clarke, 1967-77, 379.

Skiverton was said to be delighted to have signed a contract extension after a few weeks of uncertainty after his previous deal ran out at the end of last season. The Glovers' chief executive, Martyn Starnes, is also delighted to have secured the services of Skiverton, popularly known as Mr Yeovil, for another year.

Skiverton, meanwhile, has to score 21 goals to break into Yeovil's all-time top 20 goalscoring chart.

He is due to be rewarded with a testimonial season in recognition of his ten years with the club.
