Yeovil Town play host to Chernobyl Children's Life Line charity

YEOVIL Town’s Community Sports Trust recently played host to a group of Ukrainian children.

The youngsters all live less than 50km from the scene of the worst radiation leak the world has known.

The Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear reactor accident that occurred in April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, which was then part of the Soviet Union.

The disaster resulted in a severe release of radioactivity following a massive power excursion that destroyed the reactor.

It has led to thousands of people suffering from cancer, but a visit away from the area even now – 23 years on – could add as much as two years to their lives.

The children’s recent visit to Huish Park was organised by the charity Chernobyl Children’s Life Line who have branches all over the world.

The visit was organised by Ricahrd Lewis, of the Yeovil and Sherborne branch of the charity, with the children staying with local families.

The youngsters were given a tour of Huish Park and watched the players train.
