Best of the local bands on new CD
The Purple Collection highlights best of the South-West bands.
The Purple Collection highlights best of the South-West bands.

APRIL: THE PURPLE COLLECTION.

THE South-West's best new bands are highlighted in the first CD issued by Purple Nature Soundz, released out of Taunton.

The accompanying magazine, edited by Nick Burman, gives details of all the bands, "from garage rockers via indie types, straight to experimental electronica. Every band is proving themselves, whether its through their live shows or the fact that they write great songs, often both."

First up are Royal Males with 'Flipside', the Taunton based indie punk outfit all nearing the end of two years at Richard Huish College but with a gig lined up in hip London pub Nambucca - a fast paced riffy number but the cockney singing style is no longer original; the youngest band El; Coda's heavy rock number 'The After Party', swings from fast tempo to slower; South Devon outfit Start Me Up give us 'You're Outta Control', a raw rocker with a Small Faces sound and a hint of 80s punk; Hey Molly are making a name for a girl from Teignmouth with 'Kity', another fast paced rocker but more London boy singing which took the e off for me; OMG Phil!'s dance floor synth sound 'You are Thunder' has great fazes and riffs giving us Ibiza in the West Country and was very original if short; the Melancholy Moose Society's 'Oh My' was fuzzy guitars and West Coast 60s but again those voices aren't original enough for me - find a sound lads; Le Chat Noir used hailer voices, great riffs in a heavy rocker but came in at two seconds over two minutes - no one releases 60s-short singles anymore! - in 'Sam Colt and the Devil'.

The Ricky's have two new members and their 'Am I Staying' and their double guitar sound was a treat; and finally the Naturals wrapped things up in 'Boxes', another good hook and one of their favourite songs on gigs.

Purple Nature Soundz is a great idea and outlet for our local music. "Independent, passionate and proud we're here to excite the dying social/music scene in the area by releasing material from local acts through such projects as The Purple Collection and getting 'live' music back into the surroundings," says the website www.myspace.com/purplenaturereleases where they'll be posting dates of gigs where they will be selling the album, which costs just £5.

If you love music, then this is where it all starts so support your South-West bands and get a copy - it's a great taster of what's around and what might one day be climbing the charts.
