The going was good for one hundred riders who took part in the Mare and Foal Sanctuary’s Midsummer Fun Ride at the weekend.

The annual event at the charity’s Coombe Park Visitor Centre saw riders enjoying eight miles of tracks through the woods of the beautiful Berry Pomeroy estate.

Proceeds went towards the charity’s work to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome equines throughout the South West.

The event attracted riders of all ages and abilities, from children on their ponies on lead reins to event riders in training. Leanne Klinkenberg, who was leading her seven-year-old daughter Francesca on her pony Miss Marple, said the Midsummer Ride was a great way to build confidence.

She said: “It’s lovely to get out and ride in a different environment. Francesca has lost her confidence a bit lately so we thought this would be a good way to get out and enjoy ourselves. It’s also keeping me fit!”

Emily Brookman, who took part with her horse Tauka, said: “It’s a great ride. We’ve done it on a few occasions, but this is the first time we’ve done it on our own. We really enjoy it.”

Judy Elliott, on Fleetwood Mac, who is off to the Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead this week to take part in the Ladies Hunter Side Saddle competition, said: “It’s a lovely atmosphere and it’s a really safe ride for all abilities.

“It’s great to be able to go at your own pace and to enjoy the lovely scenery.”

Community fundraiser and ride organiser Jenny Bowden said: “Everyone had a great time and the rain held off for most of the morning.

“It’s always a great atmosphere and you can hear the riders chatting away as they head off. It’s also a ride which can be taken slowly, but also offers a bit of cantering for the more experienced.

“But it wouldn’t be possible without the support of the team at Berry Pomeroy. Thanks to them we have raised more than £1,620 for the charity, to care for and rescue even more horses and ponies in need.”

The charity is hosting a further upcoming event, the Well Horse, Well Rider and Family Fun Day on July 6 and 7.
