A good number of prime cattle this week met a two-tier trade with butchers’ quality selling extremely well but a lack of more commercial types which affected the averages.

Top price per kilo was 208p (£1,302) for a Limousin x steer from Mr. A.M.C. Eddy of St. Erth purchased by David Wilton of Peter Morris Butchers, St. Columb.

Premium heifer came from a super run of half a dozen Limousin crosses from George Richards Farms of Summercourt bought by David Ellis of Lelant at 194p/kg with top value on the day a 717kg steer from the same farm realising £1,362 to R.J. Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.

A nice entry of Hereford steers from Mr. K.G. Teague of Coombe saw his 18 month trio hit £840.

An entry of March-born Limousin x suckled calves for Mr. C.P. Rundle of Par sold well with the five steers at £720 and heifers £525.

A part herd dispersal of South Devon cows and calves saw a packed ring and keen bidding on a fine entry from Messrs. R.J. & S.J. Rundle of Kestle Mill, Newquay.

Top price of the day was £1,340 for a South Devon cow with a pair of calves at foot.

Top price for a South Devon cow and single calf was £1,210 with two further outfits £1,190.

The cows and calves sold very well with an average of £1,130.

A pair of Friesian Holstein in-calf heifers from Mr. J. Penhaligon of Portscatho, Truro realised £800.
