Greenslade Taylor Hunt report an increased entry of 116 prime cattle met another much improved trade.

Top was 205ppk for a shapely, well covered, dunn Charolais heifer, being a near perfect butchers’ heifer at 567kg, which was bought by Palmers of Weston Super Mare and consigned by Cole & Partners, Kingston Seymour. Another superb butchers’ heifer being a 480kg Blue from SER Hunt, Kilve, met a call of 201.5ppk. Further butchers’ type Blue heifer at 198ppk from J & J Meaker, Langport. Lean, feeding Charolais heifer at 195.5ppk from DJ Cossins, Blagdon Hill, who sold another similar at 193ppk. More butchers’ heifers at 192.5 and 189.5ppk (549kg & 538kg Blues) from TE Pocock & Co, Stringston; 191.5ppk (635kg, South Devon) Cole & Partners again and 189.5ppk (570kg, Angus) from AAB Rowe & Son, Chilton Trinity. Commercial weight heifers at 192.5 for a 647kg, shapely Blue from Cole & Partners again and 192.5ppk again, 617kg, shapely Blue from J & J Meaker & Son again. Good type heifers at 190.5ppk (494kg, Limousin) and 189.5ppk (642kg, Limousin) from RJ Cox, Witheridge and 189.5ppk again (572kg, Limousin) from CJM Shackleton, Wiveliscombe.

Steers rose to 202ppk for a shapely, very lean Limousin steer (26m, 603kg) from J & DJ Cotterill, Monksilver, who sold similar red Limousin steers at 194.5 (586kg) 192.5 (618kg) and 189ppk (686kg). Shapely, fleshed red Limousin steer at 199ppk from CJM Shackleton again. Medium weight smart Limousin steers from MJ Tuckett & Partners, Exeter met calls of 195.5 (566kg) and 188.5ppk (562kg).

Further mediumweight Limousin steer at 195ppk (634kg) from FG Payne & Sons, Wrangway.

Native steers topped at 191.5ppk for a Hereford from D Barnes, Yarcombe, who sold others at 190 and 188ppk. Angus steer at 191ppk from F & M House & Son, West Huntspill. Devons to 186.5ppk from RJ Cox again.

Steers sold to a tremendous £1,491.12 for a massive 912kg Angus from CG, GR & MS Spiller, Upottery, who sold another Angus (735kg) at £1,319.33. Heavyweight Simmental steers at £1,348.70 (731kg) and £1,332.00 (720kg) from WE & AG Taylor, Crewkerne. Heavyweight Blue steers at £1,339.07 (718kg) from J & J Meaker & Son and £1,311.98 (765kg) from SJB Adams & Son, Bridgwater.

Heifers sold to £1,271.16 for a heavyweight Blue (642kg) from J & J Meaker & Son, which sold to Puxton Park, Hewish. Further heavyweight heifers at £1,261.75 (721kg, Blue) from A & JE Fewings, Dunster; £1,251.47 (682kg, Limousin) and £1,206.40 (640kg, Limousin) SER Hunt again; £1,245.48 (647kg, Blue) and £1,216.03 (635kg, South Devon) Cole & Partners again; £1,225.25 (650kg, Limousin) J & J Meaker & Son again and £1,216.59 (642kg, Limousin) from RJ Cox, again.

81 Barren Cows and Cull Stock Bulls. Auctioneer’s comments:

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a reduced entry of 81 barren cows, when the general quality on offer wasn’t able to match that of last week’s and met an easier trade, reflecting what was on show.

Top 155.5ppk for a very smart Charolais from JH, MB & DJ Jewell, Durston, who also sold a well fleshed Blue at 144.5ppk. Best meat Simmental cows at 138.5ppk twice from both CG & C Vigar, Curry Rivel and V Young & Sons, Bristol, who sold a good meat type at 131.5ppk. Good meat Blue at 136.5ppk from TJ Samways & Son, North Perrott, who also sold a good meat Charolais at 133.5ppk. Another good meat Charolais at 133.5ppk again from JD Lock, Churchstanton. Feeding Limousin at 133.5ppk from JA & G Aldworth, Madford.

Native cows peaked at 140.5ppk for a very well fleshed Angus from MR & SK Westcott & Son, Porlock. Fleshed Herefords at 138.5 and 129.5ppk; from DT Harvey, Bampton and 134.5ppk from CG & C Vigar again. Further well fleshed Angus at 134.5ppk again from RJ Edwards, Bristol. South Devon at 129.5ppk fromk GP Tratt Ltd, Weston Super Mare. Best type Devon at 129.5ppk from RL Jones & Sons, Wiveliscombe.

Sucklers sold to an excellent £1,265.77 from JH, MB & DJ Jewell, whose Blue returned at £1,141.55. 807kg Simmental at £1,117.70 from V Young & Sons again.

Dairy breeds rose to 135.5ppk for a best type Holstein (840kg) from R & S Turner Ltd, Punknowle, who sold further best Holsteins at 130.5, 128.5 and 124.5ppk, good meat Holsteins at 123.5 and 120.5ppk and steakers at 118.5 and 108.5ppk. Further best meat Holsteins 129.5 and 128.5ppk, MJ Frampton & Son, Broadwindsor and 129.5ppk, NF & CO Ellis & Sons, Rampisham. Further good meat cows 128.5 and 126.5ppk from D & I Dyer, Yarcombe, who sold steakers to 123.5ppk. Good meat Holsteins again at 126.5 and 121.5ppk from JN Wyatt, Hewish. Empty steakers 120ppk plus.

2011 Finished Lambs and Hoggs. Auctioneer’s comments:

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report more lambs were forward at 1670 head and sold to a competitive trade, but at lower levels for all presented. The best sold to 244ppk from IJ Williams and R Hann & W Hooper; 243ppk from M Rowe; 242 and 240ppk from M Wall; 241ppk from MD & KE Lanfear, TE Harris and MW Bowles and 240ppk from JR & RH Williams, GR Barnett, HJ & HB Case Ltd, H & DC Besley Ltd and JE & GR Bowden & Son.

Heavier lambs sold to £108.50 from K & N Crang. Others £108 from RW Norton; £107.50 from RJ & SA Rowe Farms Ltd; £107, £106 and £105.50 from JR & RH Williams and £105.50 from WL Samways and SJ Millard. Overall average £97.85.

Fewer hoggs at 340 head sold to a very strong trade. The best sold to 235ppk from G Wall. Others 228ppk from WAM Lee; 226ppk from J Tucker & Partners and NPJ Coram; 224ppk from AA, L & R Johnson and 222pk from MH Wallis and A Vile.

Heavier hoggs sold to £119 and £115 from RJ & LA Mitchell & Voke. Others £115 and £114 from NPJ Coram; £115 and £113 from A Dagger and £112 from GJ & PC Perry, IC Churchill and RW Brunt. Overall average £95.44.
