Cattle trade was on fire! Lambs steadier.

(63) UTM and (17) OTM Prime Cattle. Auctioneer’s comments:

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report there seems to be no let up in the prime cattle trade. A short entry of 80, when some smart cattle were shown, met a flying trade! It was only a couple of weeks ago the 200ppk barrier was surpassed. This week went right through the 210ppk mark.

Top was 213.5ppk for a shapely, adlib Simmental steer (15m & FA) from MJ Tuckett & Partners, Exeter, who also sold a Charolais (only 12m & FA) at 209.5ppk and a further Limousin (15m & FA) also at 209ppk. 209.5ppk was bid again for a very shapely and very lean Charolais steer (24m) from SC Norman, Salway Ash, who sold further smart suckler bred Charolais steers at 203.5 and 195.5ppk. 206.5ppk for a cracking 608kg 31m Limousin from J & S Vinniciombe & Son. Good meat suckler bred Hereford steers at 206.5 and 203ppk from RW Darby, Bridgwater. Long run of smart Limousin cross Devon steers at 204.5 (2x) 199, 198.5 and 195ppk from Habberfield Bros, North Newton. Further better type Limousin at 199.5ppk, R Wall and 198.5 and 194.5ppk from CJ Sage, Bridport. Further better commercial Charolais at 198 and 195ppk from L & A Maddock & Co, Wiveliscombe.

Limousin cross Devon heifer at 211.5ppk from Habberfield Bros again, who sold another at 199.5ppk. Superb flesh, near pure Limousin heifers at 210, 207.5 and 205ppk from J & S Vinnicombe & Son, Ottery St Mary. Very lean Limousin heifer at 205.5ppk from TE Harris, Clevedon, who sold another slightly more fleshed at 202ppk. Suckler bred well fleshed Charolais at 203.5 and 194ppk from BA Richards, Williton. White Charolais heifer at 200ppk from SC Norman again.

Well fed dairy bred heifers at 197.5 (Lim) and 191ppk twice (Blues) from TE Pocock & Co, Stringston.

Steers sold to £1,385.52 for a 753kg Charolais from L & A Maddock & Co, who sold another at £1,326.60 (670kg). Blue steer (740kg) at £1,361.60 from CG, GR & MS Spiller, Upottery, who also sold an Angus steer at £1,344.73. A cracking 608kg 31m Limousin steer from J & S Vinnicombe & Son rose to £1,255.52.

Heavyweight Charolais heifer topped at £1,273.91 (626kg) from BA Richards, Williton, who sold others at £1,251.30 (645kg) and £1,201.06 (644kg). J & S Vinnicombe & Son sold young heifers at £1,264.20 (17m & 602kg) and £1,230.48 (28m & 593kg). Further Charolais at £1,266.00 (633kg) from SC Norman. Limousin heifer at £1,205.55 from Habberfield Bros. YFC Club calf (Blue & 644kg) at £1,201.06 from C Burrough, Axminster. Native heifers to £1,156.20 for an Angus from Wring & Coombs, Bristol.

109 Barren Cows and Cull Stock Bulls. Auctioneer’s comments:

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report what a great show of cows and fantastic to be over 100 head again at 109.

Top was 157.5ppk for a 2013 born Limousin slip from EM, JM & CL Wallbridge, Mangerton. Best continental cows very dear. Others 151.5, 147.5 and 145.5ppk, Blues, HJ & HB Case Ltd, Highbridge; Charolais cows: 149.5ppk, J &C Wylde, Bridgwater and 147.5 and 130.5ppk, JD Lock, Churchstanton. Limousin cows 145.5ppk, GT Heyward, Chilton Polden and 139.5ppk, FA Kingcott & Son, Clevedon. Better sucklers 130ppk plus.

Sucklers sold to a tremendous £1,424.74 for a huge 953kg Charolais from J & C Wylde. Blue cows £1,204.43, £1,123.26 and £1,118.05 from HJ & HB Case Ltd. Limousin cow £1,157.85 from FA Kingcott & Son. Further Charolais £1,129.85, JD Lock.

Some super meat black and whites forward to 132.5ppk from MM & EH Lucas, Ilminster, who sold other Holstein cows at 131.5 and 130.5ppk. Friesians at 132.5, 131.5, 128.5 (2x) and 125.5ppk from F & EJ Strawbridge, Axminster. Further best meat Holsteins 132.5 and 129.5ppk, JM & SN Faun, Holford; 131.5 (3x) 128.5 (2x) and 125.5ppk (2x) Newley Farm, Bishops Hull; 130.5ppk, R & J Jones, Stogursey; 127.5ppk, RC & K Wright & Son, Dunkeswell and 126.5ppk, RW, JA & AW Barton, Cullompton. Good meat cows 120ppk plus.

Dairy bred cows sold to £1,179.72 for a Holstein boat (904kg) from R & J Jones & Son. Big floats at £1,127.52 (864kg) £1,119.07 (851kg) £1,095.78 (827kg) and £1,003.47 (806kg) from MM & EH Lucas; £1,105.56 (888kg) CT Heyward; £1,083.26 (843kg) £1,082.25 (823kg) £1,078.30 (820kg) £1,054.69 (854kg) £1,052.00 (800kg) and £1,021.57 (814kg) all Newley Farm and £1,000.38 (755kg) JM & SN Faun.

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a slightly smaller entry of 1719 lambs sold as expected, at much lower prices for all presented, but especially for the lighter weight lambs. The best quality sold to 219ppk from RC Stock. Others 217ppk from LA McAllister; 213ppk from JR & RH Williams and and MD & KE Lanfear; 211ppk from MJ & C Plowright & Son; 210ppk from SG Knight; 209ppk from G & J Butt, RJ Rood & Son and NF Newman and 208ppk from TC & SCI Pain, Milborne Wick Farms Ltd, JE & LP Reason, HR & BM White & Sons and AJB Farm Partners.

Heavier lambs sold to £119 from T Parris. Others £104 from LA McAllister, RR Creed & Son and HR & BM White & Sons; £102 from S & A Bevan and £100 from D Day. Overall average £84.38.
