An outstanding barren cow trade to 164.5ppk and £1,478.86.

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a good entry in terms of numbers at 116 head met a continuing strong trade. Quality in very short supply and rose to 218ppk for a very shapely, well fleshed Limousin steer from J & S Vinnicombe & Son, Ottery St Mary. Further best Limousin steer at 213.5ppk from CJM Shackleton, Wiveliscombe. Lean, lightweight steers at 209.5 (Charolais) 208 (Blue) 204.5 (Blue) and 201.5ppk (Blue) from N Painter, Bridgwater. Smart Limousin steers 208 and 202ppk from HWC & JM Butler, Bristol; 207.5ppk, JM Darby, Bishops Lydeard and 205ppk, JF Walker & Partners, North Petherton. Several good steers in the 190’s.

Steers sold to £1,476.96 for a Charolais from BA Richards, Williton, who sold another at £1,426.73.

Heifers peaked at 209.5ppk for a very nice Limousin from JM Darby again. Butchers’ Charolais at 198.5ppk from BA Richards again. Well fleshed Limousin at 194.5ppk from J & S Vinnicombe & Son. Fleshed Angus at 191.5ppk from BJ Wallbridge & Son, Dorchester.

Heifers sold to a tremendous £1,359.73 for a 685kg Charolais from BA Richards, who sold another at £1,250.70. 712kg Blonde at £1,352.80 from HWC & JM Butler, Bristol. £1,252.58 was achieved by J & S Vinnicombe & Son for a 644kg Limousin. Hereford heifers at £1,212.18 and £1,202.93 from AJ Hunt, Yatton.

52 Barren Cows and Cull Stock Bulls. Auctioneer’s comments:

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a short entry of 52 cull cattle, when many more could have been sold to advantage. A sensational trade for the best cows saw 164.5 and 163.5ppk bid for shapely Limousins from RF, SR & RG Rawle, Parracombe. Further better type Limousin cows at 155.5ppk, ER Rosewell, Luppitt and 140.5ppk from JA & G Aldworth, Cullompton. Charolais cows at 145.5 and 138.5ppk from AS Cowling, Clatworthy, when another achieved 137.5ppk for ER Rosewell again. Blue cow at 140.5ppk from DW Pike, Stockland. Angus at 140.5ppk, PD & SA Godfrey, Lopen; 136.5ppk, MV Hone, South Perrott and 135.5ppk from Hutchings & Sons, Bridgwater.

Sucklers sold to £1,478.86 for a Limousin from RF, SR & RG Rawle, who sold another at £1,402.83. Charolais cows to £1,133.45 from AS Cowling. Blues to £1,121.38 from B Jeffery, Oakford. Hereford at £1,056.03 from G Wall, Highbridge.

Dairy breeds in great demand for flesh to 133.5ppk for a Holstein from FE Hill & Son, Coultings, who sold others at 130.5, 127.5, 125.5 and 121.5ppk. Friesians at 129.5, AB, RG & JL Darby, Middlezoy; 127.5 and 126.5ppk (2x) from MW Bowles, Compton Dundon, who sold a Holstein at 123.5ppk. Further good meat Holsteins to 121.5ppk from RF & BA Larcombe, Chardstock.

Dairy breeds sold to £1,074.85 for a 830kg Holstein from RF Lee & Son, Highbridge. Further Holsteins £1,050.65, £961.79 and £945.27 from FE Hill & Son.

1496 Finished Lambs and Hoggs. Auctioneer’s comments:

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a similar entry of 1496 lambs sold to an overall easier trade for all presented, as numbers nationally increase. The best sold to 224 and 219ppk from Thornhill Farm (Dorset) Ltd. Others 222ppk from R Golledge and DGB & CN Tratt; 221 and 219ppk from S & A Bevan; 221ppk from HM & KI Stowell & Son; 220ppk from MJ & C Plowright & Son, ML Coombes and SG Harraway and 219ppk from J Sprake & Partners (2x) NF Newman, RW Gould and D Clarke.

Heavier lambs sold to £112 and £108 from AR Henson. Others £111 from RM Sparks & Son; £110.50 from BAV & JE Scriven; £110 from Thornhill Farm (Dorset) Ltd; £109 from N Nation and £107 from J Sprake & Partners, PFJ Saunders and PD & SA Godfrey. Overall average £91.72.
