A fair entry of finished cattle contained a good proportion of superb quality butchers’ beasts selling to a trade which has improved week-on-week.

Half a dozen super Limousin crosses in from Messrs. W.T. Bryant & Sons of St. Martin topped the averages both sides with the premium going to a smart 530kg heifer selling at 229p/kg to Harvey Bros. Butchers of Penzance, St. Ives & Newlyn.

Their leading steer at 228p/kg also stood top value realising £1,498 to R.J. Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow; with a heavier steer making £1,430 to David King of Exeter.

On the heifer side, another cracking entry of Limousins from the Julyan Family of Summercourt peaked at 225p/kg to Chris Dale of Dales Family Butchers, Helston with overall top value heifer a 701kg Limousin x from Mr. J.A. Morphew of St. Ervan realising £1,374 to J.V. Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.

A larger than expected entry of stores for July contained mainly younger cattle but growth and quality was generally good with a larger attendance of buyers encouraged by the new rules relating to the wearing of masks.

Claiming the top prices again this week were Messrs. I.D. & S.S. Backway of St. Eval with their super run of last spring-born steers from which saw a Charolais x standing top at £1,185, a Longhorn x next at £1,150 and five Simmental and Limousin crosses all at £1,090.

An entry of 17 Charolais x 13/14 month old cattle from Messrs. G.S. Skinner & Son of St. Ervan saw dearest bunch of four steers to £970 and top heifer trio £890.

Another big entry of 19 Limousin x yearlings from Mr. C.L. Thomas of Sithney saw steer trios to £920 and top bunch of four heifers at £710.

A big British Blue x consignment of 17 well-reared mainly steers from McCardell & Thompson Ltd of Summercourt November and December-born were a stonking trade seeing dearest ten at £870 and £860.

Overall top price heifers were a smart pair of 14 month old Charolais x from Mr. J.M. Curnow of Troon at £930.

9 Suckler Cows & Calves

A special entry this week on behalf of Messrs. A.J. & S.M. Grange of Ruan High Lanes, Truro of nine pure-bred Sussex cows with their Pedigree Limousin-sired calves at foot.

The cows and calves were a superb show and sold well to a top call of £1,210 averaging £1,123.
