Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a much larger entry of 117 prime cattle, when some much smarter cattle were on offer. Trade for the best greatly improved and all types dearer.

Top was 228.5ppk for a black, very shapely and well finished Limousin steer (FA) from J & S Vinnicombe & Son, Exeter, who also sold three very smart Limousin heifers at 228, 219 and 202.5ppk. Further best type heifers at 219.5ppk for a very shapely and well covered black Limousin from RW Darby & Sons, Middlezoy, who sold another at 215.5ppk; 219, 211.5, 209.5, 207 and 201.5ppk for suckler bred Charolais from PJ Hobbs, Minehead; 209.5, 207, 205.5 and 201.5ppk for barley fed Limousins from SER Hunt, Kilve and 205ppk for a shapely, lean gold Charolais from N Painter, Lympsham.

Further best type steers at 203.5ppk for a red Limousin from RW Darby & Sons again, who also sold excellent Hereford steers at 201.5 and 192.5ppk. Smart red Limousin at 201ppk from MJ Tuckett & Partners, Exeter. Heavy weight Blue at 198.5ppk from Vigar & Son, Langport. Limousin cross Devon steer at 198.5ppk again from R & G Speed, Axminster. Feeding Charolais at 198ppk from N Painter again. Smart red Limousin at 197.5ppk from DB Hawkins & Son, Honiton. Well presented dairy bred Limousin at 193ppk from FG Payne & Sons, Wellington.

The day’s top price was £1,417.97 for a superb black Limousin heifer from RW Darby & Sons. Heavy weight heifers at £1,369.12 (688kg Charolais) from CG, GR & MS Spiller, Upottery and £1,352.40 (690kg Blue) from J & A Moon, Lighter weight Limousin (580kg) at £1,322.40 from J & S Vinnicombe & Son. Angus heifers to £1,283.33 (723kg) from RF patten, Yeovil.

Steers sold to £1,411.85 for a grand 755kg Angus from F & M House & Son, West Huntspill. Limousin steers to £1,404.15 (690kg) from RW Darby & Sons, who also sold a Hereford (650kg) at £1,309.75. Blue (705kg) at £1,399.43 from Vigar & Son. Further Limousins at £1,363.70 (687kg) R & G Speed; £1,324.95 (730kg) AJV Welch & Sons, Ashill and £1,319.50 (700kg) GI Ware, Skilgate.

117 BARREN COWS & CULL STOCK BULLS

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a much increased entry of 113 cull cattle, when trade was improved for the better meat types and those young enough and suitable to feed. A lot of very plain cows on offer to pull down the overall averages and also a shortage of farm assurance.

Top was 133.5ppk for a good conformation, farm assured, 44m Charolais cow from RM Dod, Wishel Florey, who sold another at 125.5ppk and a Blue at 123.5ppk. Best type Devon at 124.5ppk from CJ & JLM Hutchings & Sons, Brompton Regis, who also sold an Angus at 116.5ppk. A run of feeding cows from Woolhanger Farming Partners, Parracombe, met calls of 121.5 (490kg Charolais) 121.5 again (601kg Limousin) 117.5 (452kg Charolais) 116.5 (691kg Charolais and 115.5ppk (703kg Simmental. Best type non assured Limousin cows at 120.5, 117.5, 116.5 and 109.5ppk from E & IW Studley, Bridport. Feeding Blue at 118.5ppk from DH & SM Churchill, South Chard. Younger (48m) feeding Herefod cow at 117.5ppk from GI Ware, Skilgate.

Sucklers sold to £1,051.98 for a 788kg Charolais from RM Dod, who sold another at £1,023.39. Well fleshed non assured Limousin cows at £1,023.83 and £952.97 from E & IW Studley. Further good non assured Limousin cows at £903.15 and £880.85 from RWM Westlake & Sons, Churchinford. Angus at £886.57 from CJ & JLM Hutchings & Sons.

Others 208ppk from Robert Eversden Ltd; 207ppk from CJ Sage, SF & KL Evans and LM Baker & ME Goodall; 205ppk from MJ & GM Summers, SGE Hatch & Son and Clearview Farms and 204ppk from KJ Seymour, TP & JA Cole and HM Thomas & Son.
