Three barn fires have broken out in Somerset during the past week and two of them are believed to have been started deliberately.

Last night (Tuesday, February 23) crews were called to Brendon Hills, Brompton Regis.

On arrival they found a barn around 50m by 50m on fire, with the 80 tonnes of straw, three tonnes of feather and farm machinery engulfed by the flames.

Six fire engines and a water carrier attended the fire but it understood that three quarters of the building has been destroyed.

There has been no comment released on the cause of this fire, but two other barn fires over the past week are thought to have been set deliberately.

Police say that they suspect arson after a fire destroyed a barn in Creech St Michael, Taunton, last Friday (February 19).

The barn was holding 300 tonnes of hay and farm equipment when the fire broke out at just before 10pm.

Six fire engines and a water carrier attended but despite the crews' best efforts, the barn was completely destroyed.

Police are now appealing for witnesses and information as fire examiners believe the cause of the fire is suspicious.

Just two days later a second barn fire broke out in Bell Lane in Cossington near Bridgwater.

This fire, too, is believed to have been started deliberately.

On Sunday afternoon two fire engines and a water carrier found straw inside the barn well alight.

Swift action from crews and the help of the farmer and his tractor knocked the fire back and protected the adjacent main barn from being affected.

Crews turned over, damped down and dragged out the hay.
