AUCTIONEERS Greenslade Taylor Hunt will be showcasing two sales on Saturday, September 29, at The Octagon Salerooms, East Reach, Taunton.

The regular monthly antiques auction will be on view along with the biannual Autumn Sporting Sale from 9am-12.30pm. There are further opportunities to view the lots on Tuesday, October 2, and Wednesday, October 3, from 9am-5pm.

Both sales take place on Thursday, October 4. The Autumn Sporting Sale will commence following the conclusion of the monthly antiques auction.

Highlights in the sporting sale, which is put together by valuer Stuart Triggol include an oil on canvas by popular artist Donald Ayres featuring a group of Exmoor Ponies at The Valley of the Rocks in Exmoor National Park.

Another appealing painting sure to generate interest is a champion hound, oil on canvas, signed and dated 1968, by P.J. Herring.

 

In the antiques sale an oil on panel entitled “Canterbury Meadows” by artist Thomas Sidney Cooper (1803-1902) is sure to draw interest. It is guided at £3,000-£3,500.

The artist was affectionately known as “Cow Cooper” as he specialised in painting cattle and sheep. Indeed he collaborated with Frederick Richard Lee over many years, with Lee painting the landscapes and Cooper adding animals to complete the scene.

Cooper became a member of the Royal Academy in 1867. He set up an arts school in his native Canterbury. One of his most illustrious pupils was Mary Tourtel creator and illustrator of Rupert The Bear.

A beautiful single stone diamond ring is one of the standout items in the jewellery section. This dazzling item weighs approximately 2.02 carats. It has a pre-sale estimate of £7,500-£8,500.

A highly decorative Dutch, marquetry bombe front commode is one of many attractive pieces in the furniture section.

 

It is decorated all over with birds, vases of flowers and trailing foliage. The top has a shaped border above four long drawers on lion paw feet. It is guided at £300-£500.
