IN the film Shadowlands, there is a memorable quote spoken by one of the characters who said: “We read to know that we are not alone.”

I asked author, Rebecca Alexander what she thought of this quote and what it meant to her.

She said: “That really rings true. I spend a lot of time writing on my own but I do not feel I am on my own as I have my characters with me. They are my companions and I could tell what one of them would order for dinner. I know them so well.

“When I read a book I am happy and I do not mind being on my own. The characters in the book are my companions and I am on a journey with them and it is very satisfying.”

Rebecca will be at the Brewhouse Theatre on September 22, when she will lead a creative writing workshop.

This is a chance for people to discover their inner author and learn how to write a book and get it published.

As Rebecca said: “I love teaching writing classes. People’s dream of getting a book published is closer than they think. it is just a case of watching out for the pitfalls.

“For me I love writing books as I love stories. I write the type of books I would like to read. I have always liked stories and I tell myself stories to go to sleep.

“After a few weeks these stories involve into something different.

“I cannot imagine not writing. I write a book in ten weeks but I do not write for hours every day. I do an hour or two at most.”

Rebecca saw her first book published in 2013 with The Secrets of Life and Death. This was followed by The Secrets of Blood and Bone and The Secrets of Time and Fate. (this is a trilogy). Her latest on the shelves is A Baby’s Bones.

She is currently writing a new novel which as yet has no title.

Her spark to write came when she was studying for an MA in Creative Writing.

She never expected her book to be published but she is delighted to have created this new career
